What Does This Mean?

The first time he called me, I answered quickly.

"Mummy... what does this mean?"

I translated the sentence and went back to what I was doing. Then came the next sentence. And the next. Within a few minutes, I realised I had not been called for help with one word. I had become the English translator for the whole page.

Hindi textbooks, mastery books and exam papers rarely explain full sentences in English. In school, Hindi is taught through Hindi. For children who do not hear the language at home every day, working through a passage on their own can be surprisingly slow.

That observation shaped one of the simplest decisions we made at The हिंदी Lab. In Reading Aloud, Picture Description and शब्द शक्ति, a child can tap any sentence or word for its English meaning right on the screen. Seeing the Hindi sentence with its meaning beside it helps them notice how the words fit together, so they are not just translating one word at a time.

My hope: one day they will not need to tap it at all.
